After the long wait we now have Spring!! The dry fly fishing is starting to kick in and to say it is my favorite time of year is an understatement. The Dogwoods bloomed this week and usually that means a whole host of good things start in the outdoor world. I guided 2 sets of enthusiastic clients this past Saturday. The fish cooperated and I think they are all hooked on fly fishing. I fished on Tuesday with Trevor and there was a huge caddis hatch. I caught 3 on a dry about 30 minutes before dark! Did I mention I love this time of year.
We used to have this season that we called Spring. Its was warm most of the time and the fishing was off the charts. Well that has not been the case so far this year. It is the end of March and I think we have had 5 warmish days. I fished with Al and Mark yesterday there was snow on the ground in the morning and the wind blew around 20mph all day. Still we had a great time and caught several fish. Next week the weather is supposed to break and get back to normal.
I fished with Ritchie on Saturday. The water is still high and fishing great. They key to success right now is having enough weight on the fly to get it into the strike zone. We caught several very good fish on Saturday and had a great time. They were hitting on really small nymphs 16s to 22s also we got some on San Juan worms. It is supposed to rain the first of this week which is continuing to improve the fishing. Hopefully this weather pattern will continue throughout the spring.
I had the pleasure to have the opportunity to fish with the legendary Ronnie Hall this weekend. In all seriousness Ronnie and I “fun fished” this weekend and to say the least we had a ball! Ronnie is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to fly fishing and a heck of a good guy. I love the days that I am “guided”. The wonderful thing about fly fishing is you never stop learning. It is the little stuff that one does not think about that separates a successful day of fishing from a skunking.
The cold front this weekend slowed the fishing down a little bit. Once the sun came up and warmed the water a little bit the bite was on. They were taking small nymphs mostly. The water is gin clear right now which makes fishing a little bit tougher stealth is the key to getting hooked up right now.
The recent rains has finally got the creeks and rivers up to a nice flow. The trout are active and ready to play. Kelly and I have fished the last 2 days. We fished in Suches on Saturday with tremendous success.

I’m am going to have to put my day job hat on for a few minutes. I went and previewed 2 properties on the Etowah and the Chesateee rivers today. To say the least both of these properties were incredible. Shoot me a email if your interested in some killer river property.
Here it is Wednesday before the Gold Cup. As usual I don’t have enough flys tied. I have not fished Frog Hollow in weeks and have not fished Nacoochee Bend in almost a year. My game plan for this tournament is to throw rocks at my competition.
In all reality Daniel and I are really excited about this years tournament. Ben and the crew has done a real good job this year in organizing this event. This is shaping up to be the biggest tournament of the year.
